Karowe in Tshwane (local language) means “precious stone” after the diamonds being mined there. Just while they have been getting the mine operational a number of large and very valuable stones have been found and it is predicted that the mine will be one of the big kids on the block.
The opening was a big ceremony last most of the day, with dignitaries coming in from as far as Canada (the owners Lucara Diamond Corp) and of course the President. We were fortunate to be part of the VIP group and there was no shortage of money having been spent.
A highlight of the days event was a tour of the mine, from the open cast pit where the kimberlite is extracted, by blasting and then moved by massive earth moving equipment. This is then taken to the crusher, before the material goes to a mill and then to a sorter and finally to the sorting room.
