Snakes of The Plot

Mozambique Spitting Cobra

Mozambique Spitting Cobra is a highly aggressive and dangerous snake. It is also very common and often found in the vicinity of houses. resulting in numerous bites, however, human fatalities are rare.

They are more active at night. Juveniles, however are more active during the day. It preys on toads, small mammals, birds, insects and snakes.

The fangs are modified with the venom openings directed forwards and at right angles, allowing the snake to spit venom from a lying position with its head on the ground or up with its hood spread.

It can spit up to 2m and there seems to be an endless supply of venom. If the venom lands on skin or hair it has no effect, but in the eyes it causes an immediate burning sensation. The eye needs to be washed out using water immediately to avoid harming the eye, impaired vision or even blindness.
